How did you get involved in HunterNet?
I first became involved with HunterNet over 9 years ago when I undertook the project management of a HunterNet sponsored Skill Shortages in the Mining Industry project.
What made you decide to go into the field you now make your living from?
I have been involved with Vocational Education and Training for 25 years, I have a passion to see people change their lives in a positive way.
How did you get your start in the business?
I started teaching casually with TAFE in Sydney at the East Sydney Technical College.
What advice would you give me if I wanted to be successful in your line of business?
To be patient and take time to understand where the other person is coming from, as working with a variety of people you have to learn to adjust your style to suit the situation.
What do you enjoy most about what you do?
The variety of the role, working with young people, undertaking business development, working on systems and processes and seeing it all come together in a successful outcome for the apprentice, host employer and HunterNet Group Training Company.
What separates you from the competition?
Staff who care about the apprentices and hosts and work towards positive outcomes.
What would you say the culture at your organisation is?
Working together we create better outcomes and opportunities
Are you participating in or leading the field in innovation?
Leading the field in innovation and bringing changes with technology and processes to the organisation. Improving communication and efficiencies for all stakeholders.
What, if any, do you see the role of the customer playing in the innovation strategy?
We regularly seek customer feedback and apply this when possible to our business model so we know we are achieving the business needs of our customers.
What significant changes have you seen take place in your profession / area of expertise through the years?
Decline in the number of apprenticeships and traineeships due to economic climate which has made Group Training more challenging than ever.
What do you see as the coming trends in your profession/area of expertise?
Diversification from traditional apprentice roles into emerging industries and advanced engineering.
What do you get from attending forums and networking events?
I like to learn new things, so firstly the learning and application into my role, and of course, the networking and identifying potential future business partners.

Ruth is very professional, decisive and loves a challenge.
What was the strangest or funniest incident you’ve experienced in your business / organisation?
Having a car that turns itself off at the traffic lights – a bit scary at first!
What one thing would you do if you knew that you could not fail?
Write a best seller
It’s the end of a great week and you have some free time on your hands – what would you do?
Go home and spend family time – reintroduce myself!
