Celebrating International Women’s Day: Empowering Women Through Connection and Shared Stories
HunterNet Co-operative recently brought together industry, apprentices, trainees and community members to celebrate International Women’s Day with a sold-out event held at Merewether Surfhouse. The event centred around this year’s theme, “Give to Gain,” encouraging reflection on the power of support, mentorship and shared experiences in driving progress for women across industries.
Inspiring Leadership and Real Conversations
A highlight of the event was keynote speaker Tain Drinkwater GAICD, CEO of the Newcastle Jets, who shared her personal journey with honesty and determination. Her story explored both the challenges she has faced and the successes she has worked hard to achieve, delivering a powerful message about backing yourself and lifting others along the way. Her insights resonated strongly with attendees, reinforcing the importance of confidence and community in achieving success.
Voices from the Next Generation
The event also showcased a panel of HunterNet Career Connections apprentices and trainees, including representatives from Svitzer Australia, HBT Group and UGL. These emerging professionals spoke openly about what “Give to Gain” means to them, highlighting:
- The growing opportunities available for women in traditionally male-dominated industries
- The importance of mentorship and support networks
- The value of sharing experiences to inspire and guide others
Their perspectives offered a meaningful glimpse into the future of the workforce and the positive impact of continued advocacy and inclusion.
Strength in Community
Guided by emcee Mikhaila Halford, the event fostered engaging and thoughtful conversations, creating a space where attendees could connect, learn and reflect. The strong turnout demonstrated the ongoing commitment within the HunterNet community to support gender equality and professional growth.
HunterNet Co-operative also proudly partnered with Ronald McDonald House Northern NSW as the event’s charity partner, reinforcing the importance of giving back and supporting the wider community.
Looking Ahead
Events like this highlight the power of bringing people together to share knowledge, experiences and encouragement. By continuing to champion initiatives that support women in the workplace, HunterNet and its partners are helping to build a more inclusive and empowered future.
As the conversations from the day continue beyond the event, the message remains clear: when we support one another, we all move forward.
