ABOUT THE PROJECT
The Eastern Rise Offshore Wind Project is to be located off the Hunter-Port Stephens coast, between Newcastle and Nelson Bay in New South Wales, located in the proposed offshore wind zone in the Pacific Ocean off the Hunter.
The Project will provide clean energy to the National Energy Market (NEM) contributing toward the NSW and Commonwealth governments’ goal of net-zero emissions by 2050.
The Project will provide the Newcastle, Port Stephens and Nelson Bay communities and the broader Hunter region with a range of social and economic benefits through job creation and capital investment.
Thousands of jobs required during construction. There will be hundreds ongoing jobs in operations and maintenance.

The Project
- The Eastern Rise Offshore Wind Project is to be located off Hunter-Port Stephens coast, between Newcastle and Nelson Bay in New South Wales.
- Located in the proposed offshore wind zone in the Pacific Ocean off the Hunter.
- The Project is approx. 25-45 km off the coast, with approx. 115 floating wind turbines and three offshore substations, tethered to the seabed in depths of between 130 m and 250 m.
- The 1.75 GW floating wind project with capacity to generate enough electricity to power 825,000 homes with renewable energy.
- Grid connection options being considered include connection into Tomago Switchyard.
- Our preference is for shared transmission infrastructure to move the energy from where it’s generated into the National Energy Market (NEM).
Timeline
- The Project is currently in the feasibility stage, with an application for a feasibility license expected mid this year.
- A final investment decision is due in late 2027, with construction to begin mid 2028, to be operational by late 2030.
Local benefits
- The Project will provide clean energy to the National Energy Market (NEM), substantially contributing toward the NSW and Commonwealth governments goal of net-zero emissions by 2050.
- The Project will provide the Newcastle, Port Stephens and Nelson Bay communities and the broader Hunter region with a range of social and economic benefits through job creation and capital investment.
- Thousands of jobs required during construction. There will be hundreds ongoing jobs in operations and maintenance.
