HunterNet Career Connections – August Highlights 🌟

August was a huge month for HunterNet Career Connections, filled with hands-on learning, inspiring conversations, and exciting events that continue to strengthen career pathways for young people across our region.

🙌 Ignite Your Path – Engineering, Energy & Electrical Trades
We were proud to partner with Downer Glendale for the RIEP Ignite Your Path program, giving students the chance to explore careers in engineering, energy, and electrical trades.
Students toured Downer Rail’s Traction Motor Overhaul area, cleaned bearings, and chatted with current School Based Trainees onsite. The program wrapped up at our HunterNet office, where students wired an electrical buzzer and connected with HCC apprentices Nicole and Jess for career tips, Q&A, and planning advice. A big thank you to our industry partner Downer for helping us deliver such an engaging and memorable experience!

Renewable Energy Skills & Careers Expo
We were proud to attend the Renewable Energy Skills and Careers Expo hosted by EnergyCo in collaboration with the Department of Education. Our 3rd year Electrical Apprentice, Jess Smith (hosted to UGL), joined us to provide advice and insights to over 500 school students interested in School Based Traineeships and apprenticeships. An incredible opportunity to showcase the pathways available in renewable energy and the trades.

👩‍🔧 Supporting Women in Trades
Female students from Cardiff High School, Lake Macquarie High School, and Hunter Sports High School also took part in the RIEP Ignite Your Path program this month.
With hands-on activities and mentoring from female apprentices at Zeal Futures, Major Training Group, and Downer EDI Hexham, these students built confidence, explored new opportunities, and discovered exciting possibilities in trades. Initiatives like this are helping to build a stronger, more diverse future workforce.

🔌 UGL Immersion Day – Head Start Students
A huge thank you to UGL for hosting 45 electrical students as part of the Educational Pathways Program’s Head Start initiative. These students are completing units of competency in the electrical trade while gaining real-world experience through immersion activities and industry engagement. Events like this play a vital role in bridging the gap between training and work, helping students build confidence and career readiness.

🛩️ Defence Industry Technology Expo 2025
HunterNet Career Connections proudly participated in the Defence Industry Technology Expo alongside Regional Development Australia Hunter. Workforce Development Officer Grace Stevens and Recruitment Officers Georgia Smallman and Ruby Woollett were joined by Aeroskills apprentices Calvin and Heath, who helped showcase career opportunities to students from Years 7 to 12.
From flight simulators to career chats, it was an inspiring day sparking curiosity and encouraging young people to explore STEM careers in the Defence Industry.

💡 August was a month full of collaboration, inspiration, and hands-on learning.
We’re incredibly grateful to our industry partners for opening their doors, sharing their expertise, and supporting the next generation of apprentices and trainees. Together, we’re building stronger pathways and helping young people gain the skills and confidence they need for success.
