More than 700 batteries of the 1548 required for the 500MW two-hour duration Liddell Battery project have been delivered to site ready for installation in the new year.

Each battery unit includes an advanced system with cells, modules, and racks, all managed by a Battery Management System (BMS) for precise control, monitoring, and protection. It also features AC/DC distribution systems to ensure efficient energy storage and distribution.

Bulk earthworks are currently underway to level the site for the battery installations, and the project will also feature the addition of a 330kV overhead powerline.

Bayswater General Manager Len McLachlan visited the project recently with AGL Chief Executive Damien Nicks and says it provides a symbolic reminder of the transition underway.

“The battery is the first development in our Hunter Energy Hub and it’s a real sign of the times to see it under construction in the shadows of Liddell Power Station as it moves into the  demolition phase,” Len said.

“Currently, around 60 people are working on the project, and this number will increase to 200 in the coming months. The goal is to have the battery operational by mid-2026.”
