As a final story for inter-regional collaboration New.E was proud to be selected to participate by the Fukuoka Prefecture Government, and on this occasion, Boris was the lucky one to participate with businesses from NSW, including Orica, Coregas, Hydgene Renewables, Decarice, Lavo and Investment NSW. Whilst the initial excitement for developing a hydrogen economy in Australia seems to have tempered (Origin withdrawal from HVHH and FFI withdrawal from Hunter Energy Park in our own backyard), this visit was a real eye-opener in demonstrating what can be achieved with long-term thinking and conviction. The Fukuoka prefecture is a wonderful example of the helix of government, industry and universities working together to drive change, and we didn’t just hear talk, but saw real world examples of R&D and commercialisation in action for hydrogen and new energy endeavour, including:
- The Toyota Mirai hydrogen fuel cell vehicle,
- Projects in the Hibiki-nada waterfront (ITOCHU Co.),
- NIPPON COKE & ENGINEERING CO.,
- Kyushu Electric Power Co with gas fired power as well as its offshore wind turbine assembly area,
- Methanation demonstration site (Saibu Gas Co.),
- Hydrogen Fuel Gas Measurement Device Established as JIS Standard by Yabegawa Electric Industries Ltd.,
- Chubu Wastewater Treatment Center (producing methane and H2 for refuelling stations),
- Hydrogen Energy Test and Research Center (HyTReC), which has been operating for 15 years,
- Kyushu University’s substantial R&D into hydrogen and hydrocarbon synthesis,
- The Fukuoka Prefecture Hydrogen Green Growth Strategy
