HunterNet Career Connections is seeking dedicated, reliable and motivated students to embark on a rewarding career in maritime operations. Hosted by Svitzer Australia, this 24-month school-based traineeship provides hands-on experience on a variety of vessels while you complete a Certificate II in Maritime Operations (Coxswain Grade 1 Near Coastal). This is an exciting opportunity to kickstart your career with real industry experience while finishing school!
In addition to on-water experience, you will also receive shore-based training in various maritime-related roles, including vessel scheduling, hydrographic surveying, wharf operations, safety, asset management, and vessel traffic services. This entry-level maritime position is an excellent stepping stone for those looking to build a career in the maritime industry, offering exposure to both practical and theoretical aspects of port operations.

Your daily duties may include:Â
- Mooring and unmooring vessels
- Lookout duties and collision avoidance
- Engine maintenance and operations
- Steering and manoeuvring of vessels
- Vessel maintenance, refuelling and cleaning
- Participating in drills, exercises and maintaining vessel logs
- Completing task book activities
Essential Criteria:
- Completion of the 2025 Float Your Boat program
- Exceptional organisational and multitasking abilities
- High level of attention to detail and problem-solving skills
- Ability to work effectively in a small team
- Ability to take initiative
- Safety-conscious
- Resilient and confident
- Passion for the maritime industry
- Ability to obtain a Maritime Security Identification Card (MISC)
- Ability to pass a colour vision test
- Ability to obtain a Certificate of Medical Fitness as a domestic Seafarer – AMSA
- Minimum age 16+
Desirable Criteria:
- Familiarity with the maritime industry
- Background in water-based activities, sports or hobbies
